Teaching

Some of my recent teaching accomplishments over the last two years involve the creation of a Harry Potter themed virtual escape room used to teach toxicology to pediatric residents, emergency medicine residents, pediatric emergency medicine fellows, and other medical trainees. I have used this educational activity with over a dozen groups of learners and plan to publish this work in the coming year. I have also given multiple divisional lectures with the most recent being lectures reviewing some of the most prominent and important literature in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. I love to speak at national conferences and most recently presented my research in high-risk pediatric intubations at the American Academy of Pediatrics national conference in October 2023.

FEEDBACK AND EVALUATIONS

One of my greatest joys is teaching medical trainees in the clinical setting. I like to begin a shift by introducing myself to new learners, thanking them for being present, and asking how they prefer to receive feedback. It is important to create a psychologically safe and supportive space for learning. Together, we create a plan for frequent two-way feedback. My dream future is one where all learners come to a shift expecting feedback.

“Feedback” is a term originally coined by flight engineers to describe a rocket’s directional system that provides information about its course and causes it to correct. The purpose of feedback is formative – to reinforce the good things and suggest modifications as needed. In the absence of feedback, silence can lead to assumptions (good or bad). Feedback to learners is a part of our responsibility to the learners, to ourself, to the profession, and to our patients.
